Every time I visit my wife’s parents, I feel like I’m walking on eggshells. No matter what I do, it feels like I’m never good enough. I just want to feel respected in their eyes.

Man, I’ve felt this deep. It’s like there’s always this invisible scorecard when I’m around them. I used to take it really personally, but eventually I realized they had their own expectations and fears. Once I stopped trying to win their approval and just started being myself—respectful, but real—it eased up a bit. It’s not perfect, but I don’t dread the visits like I used to.
