😔 Has menopause made me feel like a stranger to my own body?

I’m 54, and lately I feel like I’m living in a body I don’t completely recognize anymore. I expected menopause to bring hot flashes and maybe some sleepless nights, but I wasn’t prepared for how much it would affect the way I see myself.

My clothes fit differently even though I haven’t changed my eating habits much. Some mornings I stand in front of my closet for ten minutes because everything seems to look wrong. I’ve also noticed that I’m more tired than I used to be. After working all day, making dinner, and trying to keep up with the house, I sometimes just sit in my car in the driveway for a few minutes because I don’t have the energy to walk inside.

My husband keeps telling me I look fine, and I know he means well, but I don’t really feel fine. I miss feeling comfortable in my own skin. I used to enjoy getting dressed, going out with friends, and taking pictures. Now I find myself avoiding mirrors and quietly comparing myself to women who seem to have everything together.

I know getting older is normal, and I’m not trying to look twenty-five again. I just want to feel confident and at peace with myself.

Have any other women experienced this kind of change during menopause, and if so, how did you learn to feel comfortable in your body again?

I’m 59, and I could have written this myself a few years ago. What surprised me most was realizing that I wasn’t only dealing with physical changes. I was grieving a version of myself that I thought I was supposed to keep forever.

For me, things slowly improved when I stopped treating my body like a problem I needed to fix. I bought clothes that actually fit instead of keeping the smaller sizes in my closet as some kind of challenge. I started taking short walks because they made me feel better, not because I was trying to burn calories. I also made an effort to do little things that made me feel feminine again, like wearing earrings or putting on lipstick before running errands.

I also talked honestly with my husband. He didn’t fully understand what was happening until I explained that compliments weren’t enough—I needed emotional support too.

Some days I still have moments when I don’t love what I see in the mirror. But I’m learning that confidence doesn’t have to mean loving every part of aging. Sometimes it simply means being kinder to yourself while you go through it.

You’re definitely not alone, and I truly believe this chapter can become more comfortable than it feels right now.
