🌿 How do I find myself again after years of putting everyone first?

I’m 56, and lately I’ve realized I’m not sure who I am outside of being someone’s wife, mother, daughter, and employee. That sounds dramatic when I write it down, but it’s honestly how I’ve been feeling.

My youngest moved out last year, and my husband and I have settled into a quieter routine. He seems perfectly comfortable with it. He comes home, watches sports, works in the garage, and has his hobbies. I come home from my job, make dinner, answer texts from my mom about her doctor appointments, check in with my daughter, and somehow end the night scrolling on my phone because I’m too tired to do anything else.

My mother is 82 and beginning to need more help, although she still lives independently. I’m grateful that I can be there for her, but I also feel guilty whenever I’m not available. At work, I’ve recently been given more responsibility, and I’m finding myself exhausted before the week is even half over.

The strange part is that nothing is terribly wrong. My family is healthy overall. I have a decent marriage, a steady job, and friends I could call. Yet I feel like I’ve disappeared somewhere along the way.

I keep thinking I should take a class, travel, exercise, or pick up one of the hobbies I used to love. Then I feel selfish for spending money or time on myself.

Has anyone else reached this stage of life and felt like they needed to rediscover who they are?

I understand this more than I wish I did. I’m 59, and a few years ago I had almost the same realization. I had spent decades being needed by everyone, and when the constant demands finally slowed down, I didn’t know what to do with myself.

What helped me was stopping the idea that I needed to “find myself” in some dramatic way. Instead, I started making very small choices based on what actually made me feel like me. I joined a Saturday morning pottery class, even though I was terrible at it. I started taking walks without using that time to make phone calls or solve problems. I also began having coffee with a friend once a month, just because we enjoyed each other’s company.

The hardest part was letting myself do those things without explaining or apologizing.

You don’t have to become a completely different person. You’re allowed to become more of yourself after years of caring for everyone else. And taking care of your own emotional energy isn’t abandoning your family.

Start with one small thing that belongs only to you. You may be surprised how quickly those little pieces begin fitting together again. You’re not too late. This chapter can still be yours.
