🌿 At 56, Why Do I Feel Lost Now That My Children Need Me Less?

  • 0
  • 0

I’m 56, and lately I’ve been wondering what happened to the woman I used to be.

For most of my adult life, my days revolved around other people. I raised two children, worked part-time when they were young, eventually moved into a full-time job, and somehow kept the house running in between. There was always a school event, a doctor’s appointment, a birthday, a grocery list, or someone who needed a ride.

Now my daughter lives in another state, and my son is finishing college and rarely needs my help. I’m proud of them, honestly. I love seeing them build their own lives. But when the weekend comes and there isn’t a soccer game, family dinner, or errand to run, I sometimes sit in my kitchen with my coffee and realize I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with myself.

My husband and I are still together, but our relationship feels different too. We talk about bills, his work, my mother’s appointments, and what needs fixing around the house. Sometimes we look at each other across the dinner table and I wonder when we stopped talking about our dreams.

Even my hobbies feel unfamiliar. I used to paint and read novels, but lately everything seems like something I “should” do rather than something I actually want.

I know I’m fortunate, but I also feel strangely sad and restless. Has anyone else reached this stage of life and felt like they had lost their sense of purpose?

I completely understand what you’re describing. I’m 61, and I went through something very similar when my youngest moved out.

At first, I thought I would be thrilled to finally have more freedom. Instead, I felt almost embarrassed by how empty the house seemed. I kept finding little reasons to text my kids because I didn’t know how to fill the silence.

What helped me was realizing that I didn’t have to immediately discover some grand new purpose. I started very small. I signed up for a watercolor class at the local community center, even though I hadn’t painted since my twenties. I began meeting one friend for coffee every Thursday morning. I also started taking walks without turning them into errands.

The biggest change, though, was in my marriage. I finally told my husband that I missed us. It wasn’t an accusation. I just admitted that I wanted us to become curious about each other again. We started having dinner without our phones and occasionally taking little day trips.

You haven’t lost yourself. You’ve spent decades taking care of everyone else, and now you’re getting an opportunity to meet yourself again.

It may feel uncomfortable at first, but that doesn’t mean something is wrong. Sometimes a new chapter begins with simply admitting that you’re ready for one. 🌷
