😔 I’m 56 and suddenly feel like my marriage has become a roommate situation

I’m 56, and lately I’ve been wondering when my marriage stopped feeling like a marriage and started feeling like two people sharing a house. My wife and I have been together for almost 30 years. We raised two kids, worked through mortgages, job changes, family problems, and all the usual stuff. Our youngest moved out last year, and I thought we would finally have more time for each other.

Instead, it feels strangely empty.

We have dinner together sometimes, but we mostly talk about bills, groceries, appointments, or what needs fixing around the house. We rarely go anywhere just the two of us. When we’re sitting on the couch, she’s usually looking at her phone and I’m watching TV. We sleep in the same room, but there’s not much affection anymore.

The difficult part is that neither of us is openly unhappy. There are no huge arguments or major problems. She’s a good person, and I still care about her deeply. That almost makes it harder to explain why I feel lonely.

A few weeks ago, I suggested that we take a weekend trip somewhere, just the two of us. She said, “Maybe later,” and went back to what she was doing. I laughed it off, but honestly, it hurt more than I expected.

I don’t want to blow up a 30-year marriage because we’ve become disconnected. But I also don’t want to wake up at 65 and realize we spent the last decade simply existing beside each other.

Has anyone else experienced this after the kids left home? How did you reconnect with your spouse?

I went through something very similar in my early 50s. When our kids left, I suddenly realized how much of our marriage had been built around being parents. Once that disappeared, my wife and I didn’t really know what to do with each other.

For a while, I made the mistake of waiting for her to notice the problem. She didn’t. I eventually realized she probably felt just as awkward and disconnected as I did.

I started with something very small. Instead of suggesting a big vacation or having a serious “we need to talk” conversation, I asked her to take a walk with me after dinner. No phones, no TV, no discussion about money or the kids. We just walked.

It felt uncomfortable at first. But after a few weeks, we started talking again about things that had nothing to do with responsibilities. We eventually took a short trip together, and it reminded us that we were still a couple, not just former parents living under the same roof.

I wouldn’t try to fix 30 years in one conversation. Start by creating small moments where you can actually be together again.

You’re not too late. Sometimes a marriage doesn’t need to be rebuilt from scratch; it just needs attention before the distance becomes permanent.
