πŸ˜” At 55, Why Do I Feel So Lonely Even When My Marriage Is Fine?

I’m 55, married for 27 years, and from the outside, my life probably looks pretty stable. My wife and I get along, we pay our bills, we take care of the house, and we have two adult children who are doing their own thing. There hasn’t been some big argument or betrayal that I can point to.

But lately, I’ve been feeling strangely lonely.

My wife and I still talk every day, but most of our conversations are about practical thingsβ€”what we need from the grocery store, appointments, bills, or what the kids are doing. At night, we usually watch something together, but sometimes I realize we haven’t really talked about how either of us is actually feeling.

Work has also changed. I’ve been doing the same type of job for more than 20 years, and I’m tired in a way that sleep doesn’t seem to fix. I’m not sure I want to retire yet, but I also can’t imagine doing this for another ten years.

The hardest part is that I don’t really have anyone I would call just to talk. Most of my old friends are busy with their families, jobs, or their own problems. I used to think having a quiet life meant I had made it. Now I wonder if I’ve simply gotten too comfortable and stopped building relationships.

I’m not depressed, and I’m grateful for what I have. I just miss feeling connected to people and excited about something.

Has anyone else reached their 50s and suddenly realized their social and emotional life had become much smaller than they expected? What did you do about it?
