😕 Am I too old to start over after losing my sense of purpose?

I’m 58, and I’ve reached a point in life where everything looks fine from the outside, but I’m struggling more than I want to admit.

I’ve worked in the same industry for almost 30 years. It paid the bills, helped put my kids through college, and gave me a sense of identity. But lately, I wake up on Monday morning already counting the hours until Friday. I’m not miserable at work exactly. I’m just tired of doing something that no longer feels meaningful.

My oldest daughter lives across the country, and my son is busy with his own career and family. I’m proud of both of them, but I’ve realized how much of my daily life used to revolve around being a dad. My house is quieter now, and some evenings I’ll eat dinner alone while watching whatever happens to be on TV.

A few months ago, I started thinking about taking a completely different direction. There’s a community college nearby offering woodworking classes, and I’ve always loved working with my hands. Part of me wants to enroll and maybe eventually turn it into a small side business.

Then the practical voice in my head starts talking. What if I’m wasting money? What if I’m terrible at it? At 58, should I really be experimenting when retirement is getting closer?

I know plenty of people reinvent themselves later in life, but it feels different when you’re the one standing at the starting line.

Has anyone here made a major change in their late 50s or 60s and actually found a new sense of purpose?

I’m 63, and I wish someone had told me earlier that starting something new doesn’t have to mean throwing your entire life away.

I retired from a job I had been doing for 35 years, and I was completely unprepared for the silence afterward. I thought retirement would feel like freedom. Instead, I felt like I had lost the role that explained who I was.

A friend convinced me to take a beginner photography class at the local community center. I was terrible at first. My pictures were crooked, and I had no idea what half the camera settings meant. But I looked forward to that class every week. Eventually, I started photographing local events and helping a nonprofit with their newsletter.

It didn’t become a second career, and that was actually the point. I found something that made me curious again.

If woodworking interests you, I’d take the class before worrying about whether it could become a business. Give yourself permission to be a beginner. You don’t need to have the next ten years figured out before you take the next step.

Getting older doesn’t mean the interesting part is over. Sometimes it means you finally have enough experience to choose something because you genuinely want it.

I hope you give yourself that chance. It’s never too late to become curious about your own life again.
